A member of the American Film Commission International (AFCI) since 1981, The Puerto Rico Film Commission (PRFC) was created by act of law primarily to develop the arts and sciences of the island, with the Film Commission in particular established as a means of promoting incentives to off-island producers to shoot there. Helmed by Executive Director Luis Riefkohl, the PRFC's primary incentive is an industry-high 40% tax credit, providing also such varied services as location scouting and permit clearance, and the provision of professional bilingual crews and the latest equipment technology. Overall this package has made Puerto Rico the number one destination in the Caribbean for film production, attracting several big-budget productions over the years including amongst others, 007's 'Goldeneye', Steven Spielberg's 'Amistad', and Robert Zemeckis' 'Contact'. Apart from offering services to foreign productions the PRFC has also been instrumental in fostering the production of Puerto Rican films and providing support for the establishment of new distribution companies in Puerto Rico. As part of our ongoing effort to support emerging talent in local film industries worldwide and in Latin America in particular, Buena Onda was instrumental in helping structure the development fund set up by the PRFC and our parent company, IFC. Buena Onda is now actively assisting in the development and co-production of projects that are going through the fund with the first films, ‘Maldeamores’ and ‘Santo e Palo’, expected to shoot in early 2006. Crucially for us, both of them will be Puerto Rican stories made by Puerto Rican crews.
