Created in 2002 in association with Estudios Mega in its native Brazil, Rain was the first company in the world to create an active digital screen network. Working in close collaboration with independent exhibitors and distributors from its offices in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and New York, by 2004 the Rain Network had digitized more than 80% of the independent cinema circuit in Brazil. Using its own revolutionary Kinocast® system, Rain administers all content on its digital screen network, including films, trailers, and ads, thereby fulfilling the needs of all the major players in the industry: distributors, exhibitors, and advertising agencies. Created to fully support every major projection technology and data compression system in the market, Kinocast® is also capable of receiving play-list data from its screens and in turn generate regular reports for its clients. In short, Rain has brought forth a model which offers the increased flexibility and speed of programming of a greater variety of content for a fraction of what traditional distribution and exhibition costs. As if that wasn't enough there's also the ecological factor, with digital cinema representing significant reductions in celluloid production, ensuring Rain's reputation as one of the truly environmentally friendly pioneers of world cinema. For all players this has been great news: For advertising agencies for example this has meant greater precision in their target marketing and support from specialized sales teams within Rain. For exhibitors this has allowed for online programming and exhibition reports, remote session programming, manual/automatic play function, and events. Finally, for distributors this has insured lower costs per screening, low-risk releasing without the cost of print investment, online reservations and licensing, real-time auditing, new trailer and teaser formats, focus-group screenings, multiple subtitling capabilities, and greater safety. Being of a similar pioneering spirit and able to bring content to the table, Buena Onda began talks with Rain in early 2005 on areas of common ground and we are proud to report that following our joint event during the Cannes FIlm Festival in May 2005, we are currently working together to spread the digital revolution, empowering filmmakers and their stories around the world.
